Because items like ice cream or gum have many ingredients, it is impossible for the entire product to be Fair Trade certified; however, common ingredients such as sugar or cocoa can be certified Fair Trade. Some companies who do not produce items that can be Fair Trade certified commit to using Fair Trade certified ingredients in their products.
“For products like cookies, ice cream and chocolate bars, all ingredients that can be sourced as Fairtrade must be Fairtrade. The percentage of each Fairtrade ingredient must be displayed on the back of the pack. And at least 20% of the content must be Fairtrade certified. Many companies go above and beyond that.”
